AmeriCorps Educator

Overview:

Bluegrass Greensource is looking for a highly motivated and experienced professional to join its education team. This Environmental Education Leadership Corps (EELCorps) member will help Greensource’s educators facilitate high quality, experiential, standards-aligned lessons and outdoor programming to youth across Central Kentucky.

Background:

Bluegrass Greensource was formed in 2001 to provide environmental education and resources that equip and empower Central Kentuckians to ensure clean, healthy, and enjoyable environments. Our staff members are dedicated to environmental education about water quality, waste reduction, and energy.  We focus on facilitating preschool-high school, business and adult education in 20 counties.

Position description:

The duties and responsibilities of the AmeriCorps Educator include but are not limited to the following. Position may be tailored to the applicant’s strengths and interests. Position will be based primarily in the Fayette and Woodford County areas.

Facilitate Environmental Education programming

        • Teach environmental lessons in classrooms and outdoor settings to students across Bluegrass Greensource’s service region
        • Topics may include water quality, energy, waste reduction, and/or ecology
        • Assist with field trips by developing and leading learning activities for at nature preserves, parks, creeks, among other sites
        • Assist with outreach events to facilitate learning experiences for students and families
        • Serve as a liaison between Bluegrass Greensource and the schools in Greensource’s service region by maintaining communication with school and community contacts

Reporting

        • Maintain accurate records of all lessons, events, purchases
        • Maintain accurate weekly time and travel records
        • Perform related duties as required
        • Aid in maintaining educational resource library by keeping inventory of supplies, replacing materials as needed, and checking materials out to community members (as requested)
        • Aid in preparation and safety checks of field trip sites

Minimum qualifications:

      • Experience working with youth
      • Familiarity with environmental education
      • Eagerness to provide high-quality, inclusive environmental education in formal and non-formal education settings
      • Self-motived and able to meet deadlines
      • Able to collaborate, communicate, and coordinate effectively with team members, teachers, students, and community members
      • Proficient with Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, and Google applications (Gmail, Drive, Calendar)
      • Available for some evening and weekend events
      • Able to lift objects weighing up to 25 pounds
      • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation

 Desired qualifications:

      • Training and experience in environmental education
      • Bilingual

 Physical demands of the position:

Work is performed in Greensource’s office and onsite at schools/field trip locations, both indoor and out; intermittent standing, walking, stooping is required; must be able to lift objects weighing less than 25 pounds as a job requirement; must operate vehicle.

Compensation and benefits:

Interested applicants may select a full or half-time position, based on availability.

Full-time members commit to 1,700 hours of service beginning on or before September 1, 2024, and serving through August 31, 2025. Members receive a total living stipend of $20,000 divided up and provided on a bi-weekly basis. While the hours worked per week are flexible, the member will be expected to work an average of 40 hours each week. In addition, the member will have the opportunity to receive certification as a Professional Certified Environmental Educator through the Kentucky Environmental Education Council. Additional benefits include healthcare, travel reimbursements, access to the Mental Health Member Assistance program, child care assistance (if eligible), and a Segal Education Award of $7,395.

Half-time members commit to 900 hours of service between September 1, 2024 and August 31, 2025. Members receive a total living stipend of $10,000 divided up and provided on a bi-weekly basis. The member will receive environmental education training in national curricula. Benefits include travel reimbursements, access to the Mental Health Member Assistance program, and a Segal Education Award of $3,967.50.

Public Relations Intern

Location: Lexington, KY

Position Type: Internship (Part-Time)

Organization Overview:

Bluegrass Greensource was formed in 2001 to provide environmental education and resources that equip and empower Central Kentuckians to ensure clean, healthy, and enjoyable environments. We currently have a staff of 5 who are dedicated to environmental education and outreach about water quality, waste reduction, and energy efficiency. We focus on facilitating preK-12, business, and adult education in 20 counties.

Avg. Hours per Week: 5-10

Key Duties:

1. Monitor activity on Social Media sites (ie Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, etc.).
2. Post relevant articles, photographs, or other information in line with the mission of Bluegrass
Greensource.
3. Assist with public relations and marketing for events (ie send out press releases, contact media).
4. Coordinates with staff to maintain a clear online message, including updating website.
5. Attend events to take photos and help promote BGGS activities.

Desired Qualifications:

    • Passion for public outreach and education.
    • Knowledge of current environmental education topics and issues.
    • Ability to interact positively with the public for long periods of time.
    • Excellent level of organization.
    • Ability to work collaboratively in teams.
    • Ability to communicate professionally.

Minimum Qualifications:

    • 18 years of age or older
    • Current undergraduate or graduate student
    • Driver’s License and dependable transportation

Outreach Intern

Position Description:

We are seeking a motivated and enthusiastic intern to support our ongoing
programming and upcoming events. This role offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on
experience in various aspects of nonprofit work, including social media, event planning, public
outreach, research, and project management.

Key Responsibilities:

    • Social Media Support:
      • Assist in managing and updating our social media platforms.
      • Create engaging content to promote our programs and events.
      • Monitor social media channels and interact with our online community.
    • Event Planning & Public Outreach Events:
      • Assist with the organization and execution of events such as sustainability
        conferences, home energy workshops, and other related activities.
      • Coordinate logistics, manage registrations, and ensure successful event delivery.
      • Table at local festivals and events to educate the public about our work and
        mission.
      • Distribute educational materials and engage with community members.
    • Project Support and Research:
      • Provide background research on various sustainability topics, including but not
        limited to energy, waste, and water.
      • Conduct research on funding opportunities and grants for the nonprofit.
      • Assist in compiling reports for funders, county entities, and other stakeholders.
    • Administrative Support:
      • Assist with email communications and scheduling.
      • Support the creation and management of programming for our wildlife reserve.
    • Volunteer Management and Cleanup Coordination:
      • Manage and coordinate volunteers for various projects and events.
      • Organize and lead litter cleanups and other community service activities.
    • Other Projects:
      • Participate in any other projects that align with the intern’s interests and the organization’s needs.

Qualifications:

      • Currently enrolled in or recent graduate of a relevant degree program (e.g.,
        Environmental Studies, Sustainability, Public Health, Communications, etc.).
      • Interest in environmental issues, sustainability, or community outreach.
      • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
      • Proficiency in social media platforms (e.g., Facebook, Twitter, Instagram).
      • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
      • Strong organizational and time management skills.
      • Previous experience in event planning, research, or nonprofit work is a plus but not
        required.

Technology and software: Strong computer skills, including Google Suite; experience with WordPress and graphic design software a plus.

Communications: Strong writing skills; strong interpersonal communication skills.

Physical: Close vision with or without corrective lenses necessary for computer work; manual dexterity needed to operate computer; ability to perform assigned duties in a time-efficient manner; valid driver’s license and a personal vehicle.
